By: Stanford Athletics, LA QUINTA, Calif. - No. 6 Stanford men's golf wrapped up play at The Prestige with a third-place finish on Wednesday at PGA West's Norman Course. The Cardinal was led by juniors Michael Thorbjornsen, who tied for third, and Karl Vilips' tie for fifth. After 12 teams concluded their second round on Wednesday morning, the 24-team field began the third round with a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start. Drama would play out over the next six-plus hours, as the winds picked up and some of the world's top amateurs battled it out to the finish in the desert.

In the final group of the day, World No. 2 Thorbjornsen played with No. 3 Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech) and No. 13 William Mouw (Pepperdine). Aberg was the two-time defending champion of the event. Thorbjornsen began the final round at 7-under, holding a one-shot lead over Mouw and a two-stroke advantage over Aberg. The trio fought to the finish, with Aberg (-6) besting Mouw (-5) and Thorbjornsen (-4) in the end.

Over the final four holes, the three golfers vying for the top spot dropped a combined 10 shots, as the conditions got tougher as the round went on. Thorbjornsen entered the 15th hole at 9-under, tied with Aberg, and two shots ahead of Mouw (-7). Aberg double bogeyed 15, while Thorbjornsen and Mouw both recorded bogeys. No. 16 proved pivotal, as Thorbjornsen doubled, Mouw bogeyed and Aberg got in with a par on the 537-yard, Par 5. Trailing by one stroke, Thorbjornsen double bogeyed the Par 3 17th, while Aberg and Mouw each registered pars. Thorbjornsen and Mouw each recorded pars on No. 18, while Aberg bogeyed, but it wasn't enough to overcome as the Texas Tech senior won his third straight Prestige event.

On the team front, it was a battle between Stanford and Pepperdine all day long. The final three holes proved to be the difference, as the Cardinal's five golfers went a combined 12-over on holes 16-18, while the Waves' five were just 4-over, an eight-shot difference in what proved to be a nine-shot deficit at the end of the day. Barclay Brown matched Vilips 2-over 73 for the Cardinal's best round of the day. At The Prestige Individual (Terra Lago North Course), freshman Anton Ouyang was Stanford's top finisher. Ouyang finished tied for 15th at 6-over.

The Cardinal is back in action on March 5 at the three-day Cabo Collegiate.

Stanford Athletics: JUNO BEACH, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford men's golf defeated defending national champion Texas, 3-2, in the third-place match at The Stephens Cup on Wednesday at Seminole Golf Club. It was a rematch of the 2019 national championship match, which the Cardinal also won at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Ethan Ng (Stanford) defeats Keaton Vo (Texas), 2up Ng fell behind after dropping the second hole of the day, but won the next two to take a 1up lead through four. Wins at No. 7 and 8 gave Ng a 2up lead at the turn, which he maintained until Vo won at No. 13 to cut the Stanford lead to one. Ng went 2up with a win at No. 14, but Vo won the next two holes to tie the match after 16 holes. Ng would close it out with a par and birdie to claim a 2up win and give the Cardinal its first point.

Mason Nome (Texas) defeats Barclay Brown (Stanford), 2&1 Nome maintained a lead throughout after winning the first hole of the day. Brown tied the match at No. 4, but Nome won No. 5 and never looked back to claim the 2&1 win and even the match.

Karl Vilips (Stanford) defeats Christiaan Maas (Texas), 2&1 Much like Nome for Texas, Vilips never trailed in the match. After both players scored par on the opening hole, Vilips won five of the next seven holes and led 5up through eight. After still leading 5up through No. 10, Maas won three of the next four holes, but Vilips matched Maas on each of the next four holes to claim the 2&1 win.

Nate Menon (Stanford) defeats Jacob Sosa (Texas), 1up What turned out to be the clinching match came down to No. 18. Menon didn't lead until a birdie on No. 15 broke a tie, but Sosa's par on No. 17 tied the match. Menon would win on No. 18 with a par to clinch both his match, and the overall match for the Cardinal.

Travis Vick (Texas) defeats Michael Thorbjornsen (Stanford), 1up Perhaps the match with the most star power saw Texas' Travis Vick pull out the match with a birdie on No. 18 to earn the Longhorns their second point. Each player led by one hole, but that was the largest margin, through 11 holes, before Vick went 2up on No. 12. Thorbjornsen bounced back with wins at No. 15 and No. 16 to force the match to No. 18.

Stanford Athletics: OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Stanford men's golf won the 2022 Fighting Illini Invitational, finishing with an even-par 280 on Sunday and claiming a dominant 12-stroke victory over a stacked field at Olympia Fields Country Club. Junior Michael Thorbjornsen claimed his first collegiate victory, firing a 4-under 66 final round to win by one stroke over Florida's Ricky Castillo and 36-hole leader Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart.

The preseason No. 15 Cardinal claimed its first season-opening tournament win since the 2014 Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club and its second Fighting Illini Invitational title of all-time (2011). The Cardinal came out on top against an impressive field which included seven of the nation's Top 11 teams: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Texas, No. 10 Pepperdine and the hosts No. 11 Illinois.

Thorbjornsen became the fourth Cardinal (six times) to earn medalist honors at the event, joining Patrick Rodgers (2011, 2012), Cameron Wilson (2013) and Maverick McNealy (2014, 2015). He began the day tied for sixth at 3-under and was even through nine holes Sunday. He'd catch fire on the back nine, though, with birdies on No. 11, 13, 15 and 18 to pull off a come-from-behind victory for his first collegiate win. In the victory, Thorbjornsen led the field in Par 4 scoring (-4), was tied for sixth in Par 3 scoring (-1) and was 2-under on the Par 5s. His 39 pars and 11 birdies over 56 holes were both in the top five.

Stanford got strong play from four scorers. Fellow junior Karl Vilips tied for sixth, his fourth career Top-10 finish, leading the field with 12 birdies. Ethan Ng's tie for ninth marked his best finish since the 2020 Southwestern Invitational. Barclay Brown finished tied for 12th in the team victory, Stanford's first since the Colonial Collegiate last fall.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Stanford was the only team in the 15-team field under par on Sunday, moving up the leaderboard three spots to finish fourth at the Fighting Illini Invitational. The Cardinal shot a 1-under 279 in the third and final round to finish with a 14-over 854 at Olympia Fields Country Club, a course that has hosted several major professional championships.

"It was great to get the rust off a bit and test our games against the best teams in the country," Knowles Family Director of Men's Golf Conrad Ray said on Sunday. "Olympia Fields is a stern test and our guys got better every round. I'm happy for Michael Thorbjornsen on his first collegiate Top 10 and the whole team played hard. There's lot of golf ahead but it was a good first week out!"
